The things people ask most. If your answer isn't here, write to us.

πŸ’΅ Getting paid

How do I start taking card payments?β€Ί

Settings β†’ Getting paid β†’ Set up payouts. Stripe asks for your bank details and enough information to confirm who you are β€” the same things a bank asks. It takes about five minutes and you come straight back here.

Until that's done, the card button doesn't appear on your invoices. Your customers can still pay you by Zelle, Venmo, cash or check the whole time.

Where does the money go?β€Ί

Into your own bank account, through Stripe. SetAllUp never holds it. Your business name is what shows up on your customer's card statement.

I finished setting up but cards still aren't switched on.β€Ί

Stripe has two separate switches: one for taking money and one for sending it to your bank. Both have to be on. It's common for the second to be waiting on a document β€” a photo of your ID is the usual one.

Settings β†’ Getting paid lists exactly what Stripe is still waiting for. If you've just sent it in, tap "Check again" rather than waiting.

We keep cards switched off until both are on, on purpose. If we took a payment while payouts were blocked, your customer would see it go through and the money would sit somewhere you couldn't reach.

When does the money actually land?β€Ί

Stripe sets the schedule, not us β€” usually a couple of days, longer for the first one. Open Settings β†’ Getting paid β†’ Open my payouts to see your balance and what's on the way.

Can I charge my customer the card fee?β€Ί

Settings β†’ Payments has a percentage you can add to card payments. Set it to 0 to absorb the cost yourself.

Whether you're allowed to add it, how much, and how you have to disclose it depends on your state and on card network rules. A few states don't allow it at all. That one's on you to check β€” we can't answer it for you.

πŸ“² Zelle and Venmo

My customer says they sent it, so why isn't the invoice paid?β€Ί

Because we can't see it. Zelle lives inside each bank's own app and Venmo doesn't tell us anything either β€” so when your customer taps "I've sent it", all we know is that they said so.

Check your own Zelle or Venmo account. When you see the money, tap "Yes, mark paid" on your dashboard. If it never turns up, tap "Not yet" and the invoice goes back to unpaid.

We could have marked it paid on their word. We didn't, because a number in your books with no money behind it is a worse problem than an extra tap.

What's that code in the payment note?β€Ί

Something like SK-1042-8B3F. It's on the invoice and we ask your customer to put it in the note when they pay, so that when three people pay you $400 in one afternoon you can tell which is which.

Do I need a Venmo business profile?β€Ί

Venmo asks that payments for goods and services go through a business profile rather than a personal one. That's between you and Venmo, but it's worth doing β€” personal-profile payments for work can get flagged.

✍️ Set Up

What is Set Up?β€Ί

It's the invoice that runs the other way. Normally you write an invoice and send it to a customer to pay. With Set Up you write up what someone did for you and what you owe them, and send it to them to sign.

Useful when you're paying a sub or a day worker and you both want it written down β€” what the work was, what the price is, that they agreed to it.

Is a signature from this legally binding?β€Ί

It's built to meet what the federal ESIGN Act and state e-signature laws ask for: the person consents to sign electronically before they sign, the signature is tied to that exact document, and both of you keep a copy.

We record the terms exactly as they stood, a fingerprint of them, the typed name, the drawn signature, the time, and a trail of everything that happened. If the document is altered afterwards, the record says so instead of quietly showing the new version above a real signature.

What it can't do is prove who was holding the phone. Anyone with the link can sign, and the record says that in those words rather than implying a check we didn't do.

Construction contracts and lien documents have extra requirements in some states, and some things can't be signed electronically at all. Worth an hour with a construction attorney if you're relying on these for big jobs.

I made a mistake in one I already sent.β€Ί

Make a new one that replaces it. The old one is marked as replaced and stays on file β€” nothing is edited after the fact, because an agreement you can quietly change isn't an agreement.

How long do you keep the signed record?β€Ί

The agreement, who signed it, when, and the full trail: permanently.

The signature image itself and the signer's IP address: ten years, then removed. Ten years is how long you could still be sued over construction work in California, so you have it for as long as you might need it. After that the record still proves a named person agreed to specific terms on a specific date β€” it just no longer holds the picture.

🌎 Two languages

How does the translation work?β€Ί

You write in your language. Your customer reads in theirs. You pick their language when you create the job, and their copy is made when you save it.

Your own screens stay in your language no matter what your customer sees β€” opening a customer's copy won't switch your app over.

Can I trust the translation on a contract?β€Ί

Treat it as a good-faith aid to understanding, not a certified translation. Prices, dates and quantities carry across exactly. Wording is translated to be clear rather than word-for-word.

For anything where the exact wording matters legally, have it translated properly.

⚠️ If a customer disputes a charge

What happens?β€Ί

The card company takes the money back while it's decided β€” that's how card disputes work everywhere, not something we choose. You'll see it at the top of your dashboard with the reason and the deadline.

The amount comes back out of your balance while it's open. If it's decided in your favour, it comes back to you.

What should I do about it?β€Ί

Respond, and respond with documents. The signed estimate, the invoice, the Set Up record, photos of the finished work β€” that's what decides these.

This is the reason to send estimates and get things signed even when it feels unnecessary. A dispute six months later is exactly when it stops feeling unnecessary.

πŸ”§ Your account

Can two people use one account?β€Ί

One account is one business, with one login. Everything in it β€” your customers, jobs and records β€” is separate from every other business using SetAllUp.

I forgot my password.β€Ί

Tap β€œForgot your password?” on the sign-in screen and put in your email. We send you a link that gets you straight back in.

The link works once and lasts 30 minutes. Leave it longer and just ask for another β€” a new link cancels the old one.

If no email turns up, check the address you typed. For your security we show the same screen whether or not an account exists, so a typo looks exactly like success.

Can my customer see my other customers?β€Ί

No. An invoice link opens exactly one invoice and nothing else. The links are long random codes that can't be guessed, and they're marked so search engines don't index them.

Still stuck?
